NEW BLOG MILESTONE - 14,000 RSS READERS

14krss.gif Even after the competition with Shoemoney, the blog’s RSS readership continues to grow. Yesterday, it passed 14,000 readers for the first time. Today, it is at a record 14,109. I want to take this time to answer a few questions about the RSS that I’ve received since the contest. The first concern why the RSS count didn’t go down, since it looked like I was asking people to sub to my RSS by feeds, emails, toolbars, etc. One would assume that after the contest was over, many people would just cancel any additional subscriptions. The reason the RSS didn’t go down is because the majority of the subscriptions are in fact new. Darren Rowse at Problogger made a post asking if Shoe and I were preaching to the converted or really trying to reach new readers. The answer is we were trying to do both. The buzz generated by the competition brought us many new readers and help convert many current readers to add the blog’s RSS feed to their readers. Having multiple channels to reach your readership is never a bad thing. The other thing you have to consider is people are generally lazy. Once you get them to subscribe, chances are they won’t go thought the effort to unsubscribe even if they don’t like you. Marketers know this and take advantage of it all the the time. That’s why you see so many “Use it for 30 days free and if you don’t like it, send it back and pay nothing” promotions. They know that most are just too lazy to send it back. How Did Shoemoney Get Over 7,000 Subscribers In Two Days? This is the question everybody wants answered. I was kicking Shoe’s ass right up to end. Then he rocketed pass me on the last day to take the win. Many people assumed Shoe hid his real RSS count to throw me off and then put up his true count on the last day. However, that’s not what happen. So how did he do it? I cannot tell you the exact method Shoe employed because I promised to keep it between us, but basically he found a bug while studying FeedBurner and exploited it. We had no rules for this competition - anything goes and that included being extremely evil. And in this regard, Shoe out-eviled me. He did have this to say in his victory post.
Officially I won the contest, but I think the REAL winner will be revealed over the course of the next few months when all the people who only subscribing for the contest entries.
My RSS count is at 14,109. Shoemoney is at 13,103. Will the REAL winner please stand up? Posted under The Net

ONE MORE REASON TO DUMP GOOGLE ADSENSE

Problogger.net broke a NDA to bring you news that Google is going to bitch slap your AdSense earnings by making it harder to click the ads. In the old AdSense setup, a reader just has to click anywhere inside the ad block to register a click and be sent to the advertiser. The new setup will require the readers to click on the actual ad title or the ad URL. The above click zone map shows what parts of the new ads are now clickable. As you can see, the click zone has been drastically reduced. The main reason for doing this according to Google:
We’re rolling out a change to our text ad formats to help reduce accidental clicks and increase value for advertisers…..This new format will match the changes we’ve implemented on Google.com to help decrease the number of accidental clicks and increase the number of ad conversions. A reduction in accidental clicks will keep users on your pages, interacting with your content until they choose to click on an ad. This change will enhance the user’s overall experience with your websites and improve advertiser campaign value, but it’s likely that your click-through rate will decrease.
It’ll be very interesting to see how the new setup will affect publishers’ AdSense earning. I don’t run Google AdSense on this blog but I have it on other sites. What do you think of Google’s new click zone? A good thing or one more reason to dump AdSense?Posted under Make Money Online, The Net

GREAT GOING

As sometimes I am on DigitalPoint.com I come across several people selling blogposts like they are doing it only for money. I usually do it because I do need some money to get established in the blogosphere and also to support my family. In the month of October I earned over a thousand dollars just by direct sales , advertising revenue , Blog posts, my network of sites and many more. Overall I do not recommend having more than one site or maximum of 2 to 3 sites or blogs because it is indeed a very much high painstaking job to maintain blogs. Now when I try to maintain some of my blogs I usually get going with them very easily because they are very less in number but think for those who have around 100 or more sites ,how do they maintain their sites and how do they try to hold their sites. Now the month is November and I have thought to get a target or $1500+ this month which I think is not hard to achieve because I have already got @ $1000 and still there is half month left and If this will be my speed of earning money I will definitely tend to get around $2000 by this month’s end, and If I do get that much of amount I will hold a New Year contest which will include something and I will be looking for sponsors as well so that It might increase rating of my blog with the sponsor’s blog / site as well. So who is going to support me in sponsoring the contest. I am definitely looking forward to have around 3 to 4 sponsors for my contest who will have all the authority like me but they will have to contribute in the contest ……. But do not think it otherwise .. I will be asking for advertisement space on your blogs only . Not for money from you. The contest Prize would be at $100 (Worth Prizes) for First Winner and may be we can decide about second and third place as well.. So wait for the contests that are coming on the New Year’s Eve and also on Christmas ……………. Keep coming to this blog and wait for some more actionPosted under Blogging, Contests, Fun, Information

TTZ MEDIA NETWORK SERVER UPGRADE

We recently completed a server upgrade to the TTZ Media Network in order to handle the influx of new affiliates. The new setup consists of the following.
  • Two Load Balancers Servers
  • Two Dual Quad-Core Xeon Clovertown 2.0Ghz web servers with 8 GB of RAM and RAID 1 hard drives
  • One Dual Quad-Core Xeon Clovertown 2.0Ghz database server with 4 GB of RAM
  • One Pentium E 1.6GHz backup server, 512 MB of RAM, 4 x 320GB IDE, 960GB Usable Space, RAID-5
  • One router for inter server communication
The six server monster was supplied, set up and configured by BlueFur Web Hosting at a cost of $3,000 per month (get 15% off when you use the JohnChowRock coupon code). We are still doing some fine tuning. A setup like this is like a high end sport car - it need to be tuned to get maximum performance. Right now, we are trying to improve the syncing of the two web servers so information updates across both servers at the same time. Many people will say the above setup can be had for a lot less than $3,000 per month and they would be correct - for unmanaged servers. However, this is a fully managed setup. If anything goes wrong, I don’t have to go down to the data center - it’s BlueFur’s problem, not mine. I’m not a server admin so I want a fully managed installation. You pay more but you have piece of mind. How Much Should You Spend On Web Hosting? This is an often asked question. Most people don’t have a problem paying $5 to $10 per month for web hosting. However, when it starts pushing into the thousands, it’s another story. My general rule of thumb is web hosting should not consume more than 5% of the site’s online income. That means if you’re paying $3,000 a month for web hosting, the site better be making at least $60,000 a month. Many web publishers like to put off an upgrade for as long as possible but I think that is a mistake. You maybe saving money but I guarantee you any savings would be completely wiped out (and more) if the server goes down because you were too cheap to upgrade. At the rate TTZ Media is growing, I expect this upgrade to last a few months before I need to upgrade again. Posted under Technology, The Net

SCOT LIES SOME MORE

It appears Mr Scot Smith from RSSxplosion.com is now trying to compete with himself for the stupid cow of the month award. Just after we said that it would be hard to top his stupidity, he proves us wrong with yet another email. This time it’s a receipt that states that we’ve ordered 12,000 RSS subscribers from him. Scot, we all have silly ideas from time to time, just be kid enough to admit it, drop the project and move on. Is all this negative attention, that is ruining your online rep for years to come, really worth the few bucks you’ll make of poor and unsuspecting newbies? How is business going for sales@rssxplosion.com anyway Scot? Made enough to buy a happy meal yet? We didn’t order anything so stop sending us fake receipts. And if you really want to make it look legit, at least change the confirmation URL in the email you’ve been sending around to more bloggers. ChipSEO.com received exactly the same email. Seriously, you need to start devoting your time and fruitless efforts in something else, perhaps a life? Anyhoo, here’s the email we received:
RSS Xplosion wrote: Bob,This is an automatically delivered message from RSSXplosion.com to confirm your order of 12,000 RSS Subscribers to be delivered in bulk on 11-13-07 @ 12pm EST. DEAL OF THE DAY - GIVE A LAPTOP, GET A LAPTOP

Give One Get One The mission of One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) is to empower the children of developing countries to learn by providing one connected laptop to every school-age child. In order to accomplish this goal, they need people who believe in what they’re doing and want to help make education for the world’s children a priority, not a privilege. Between November 12 and November 26, One Laptop Per Child is offering a Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada. During this time, you can donate an XO laptop to a child in a developing nation, and also receive one for the child in your life in recognition of your contribution. This is the first time the XO laptop has been made available to the general public. For your donation of only $399, you will be sending one XO laptop a child in a developing nation and one will be sent to the child in your life (or yourself) in recognition of your contribution. $200 of your donation is tax-deductible (your $399 donation minus the fair market value of the XO laptop you will be receiving). For all U.S. donors who participate in the Give One Get One program, T-Mobile is offering one year of complimentary HotSpot access. This is a great opportunity to give and receive. You can be among the first to get your hand on an XO laptop and empower a child at the same time. Thanks to Colin Dean for making me aware of this program. I’ve placed my order. How about you?Posted under Ramblings, Technology
